MAYVILLE, NY (CCS-TV) — The Chautauqua County Mobile Crisis Unit has been honored with the 2024 Achievement Award from the National Association of Counties, recognizing its exceptional service during crises.
Established in May 2021 to address mental health resource shortages, the unit is staffed by dedicated clinicians and peer specialists who provide on-site support, safety planning, and telehealth services. Their mission is to reduce hospitalizations and police involvement, effectively managing mental health crises within the community.
In 2023 alone, the Mobile Crisis Unit handled 424 calls, successfully resolving 403 of them without the need for hospitalizations or police intervention. This outstanding achievement underscores the unit’s effectiveness and commitment to compassionate care.
Chautauqua County Executive PJ Wendel presented the award, sharing his firsthand experience witnessing the team’s critical work in the field.
The unit’s financial sustainability is ensured through Medicaid billing, which alleviates strain on law enforcement and bolsters public safety efforts.
