Tarp Skunks Battle Back Late, Fall Just Short in Exhibition vs. Olean

JAMESTOWN, N.Y. (CCS-TV) — A strong local presence and a late-game surge highlighted the Jamestown Tarp Skunks’ exhibition contest Tuesday night, despite an 8-5 loss to the visiting Olean Oilers at Russell E. Diethrick Jr. Park.

The interleague matchup featured the Tarp Skunks of the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League and the Oilers of the New York Collegiate Baseball League. Olean built an early lead behind a dominant performance from Salamanca native Jaxson Ross, who delivered four no-hit innings and struck out three to earn the win.

Jamestown, however, showed plenty of promise — especially in the final frame, where the offense came alive and brought the tying run to the plate before Olean’s bullpen held on.

Several area standouts suited up for the Tarp Skunks and made meaningful contributions. Falconer’s Branston Lindquist scored a run after reaching base in the ninth, Frewsburg’s Chase Haglund picked up an RBI on a fielder’s choice, and Lakewood’s Jameson Walsh handled 1 2/3 innings of middle relief. Warren, Pennsylvania’s Brady Berdine closed out the game on the mound for Jamestown.

While the scoreboard favored the Oilers, the Tarp Skunks coaching staff saw real positives in the effort — from giving local talent opportunities, to using the exhibition format to prepare players for late-inning situations they may face at higher levels. Players off the bench delivered quality at-bats in key moments, which was seen as a step forward in their development.

Jamestown’s offense showed flashes of its potential. Ty Lagoni ripped an RBI double in the fifth inning, Brady McGuire tallied a pair of hits, and Nolan Smith added an RBI single in the ninth. The late rally brought energy to the ballpark and demonstrated the team’s ability to compete until the final out.

Although the Tarp Skunks fell short, the coaching staff remains encouraged by the team’s resilience and progress. With a focus on continued growth and execution, they’ll return to league play Thursday when Niagara visits Diethrick Park. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
